Lonely

I love blogging, and I think I’ve fooled myself into imagining that I’m writing my own little magazine publication of thought-provoking articles sprinkled with interesting personal anecdotes. When I write, I dream that it means something, that I’ll get lots of visits to my blog, and that “my readers” (that imaginary group of people sitting by their computers just waiting for my next post) will gain something from the time they spend at Peace Along the Journey.

Tonight, I’m ditching all of that. I’m in need of a good dose of online journaling, a flashback to the days of Xanga and the therapeutic act of sharing my thoughts just because they can’t stay in my head any longer. Continue reading “Lonely”

Back By Popular Demand

Perhaps that title is a little deceiving…in a couple of ways.

  1. I am NOT referring to Typhoon Tembin being back by popular demand, although this post is about the typhoon’s probable second bashing of Taiwan.
  2. am talking about my meteorologist wannabe posting frenzy, but I don’t actually believe that the general public is clamoring for my return in this writing arena. :) Continue reading “Back By Popular Demand”

Typhoon Tembin in Taiwan

“This is meteorologist Christel Hatcher reporting from Dashe, Taiwan.”

Ha ha, just kidding. But I am a bit of weather-girl-wannabe, so I’ve decided to create some simple posts on my blog as we experience Typhoon Tembin in Taiwan. I think this will be a good way to share updates (including photos & videos) once we really get rockin’. Since the rain and wind haven’t started yet, I’ll give a little synopsis of what the storm has been doing so far. (And if by some crazy chance the typhoon is a complete let-down and peters out, I’ll let you know that too). Continue reading “Typhoon Tembin in Taiwan”

{Prayers for Taiwan} Bringing Life to a Culture of Death

A Culture of Death

Search for “Taiwan + abortion” on Google, and you will find titles like “Taiwan’s Astonishing Abortion Rate,” “Abortions Exceed Births,” and “Taiwan has up to 500,000 Abortions in 2010“–titles that depict a culture where choosing death is an astonishingly ordinary occurrence. Most of these online articles were published in the last six months; in fact, a year or more ago when I learned by word of mouth about Taiwan’s high abortion rate, I could find very little data online about it. This is because until last summer, the most recent statistics were from over a decade ago. But on July 17, professor and pediatrician Lue Hung-chi announced in a public forum that he estimates there are 300,000 to 500,000 abortions every year in Taiwan. One article comments that if his estimate is true, “it has to be one of the highest per-capita abortion rates in the world” (“Taiwan’s Astonishing Abortion Rate“). Lue’s announcement began a long overdue discussion in Taiwan about the low birth rate and high abortion rate of recent years; rightly, these issues are of growing concern and alarm among leaders of the country.
